Style & Technique

Mistletoe Wishes showcases the distinctive artistic style that has made P. Buckley Moss one of America’s most celebrated folk artists. The composition combines elongated forms, minimalist detail, and graceful linework to create an image that is both contemporary and timeless.

The figure’s elegant silhouette dominates the composition, creating a striking focal point against the expansive winter setting. Moss employs a restrained palette of icy blues, soft whites, charcoal blacks, and subtle grays, punctuated by the vivid pink scarf that introduces warmth and visual energy. This thoughtful use of color allows Mistletoe Wishes to feel both sophisticated and emotionally engaging.

As a giclée on canvas, the artwork faithfully reproduces the subtle textures and delicate transitions that characterize Moss’s original vision. The soft washes of color, flowing contours, and expressive simplicity are preserved with exceptional clarity. Every element, from the bare branches to the gentle folds of the cloak, contributes to the artwork’s refined and contemplative atmosphere.

The minimalistic background enhances the emotional impact of Mistletoe Wishes, allowing viewers to focus on the symbolism and story contained within the figure herself. Moss’s mastery lies not in overwhelming detail, but in her ability to evoke deep feeling through elegant simplicity.

More about Mistletoe

Mistletoe is relevant to several cultures. It is associated with Christmas as a decoration, under which lovers are expected to kiss. Mistletoe played an important role in Druidic mythology in the Ritual of Oak and Mistletoe.

In Norse Mythology, Loki tricked the blind god Hodur into murdering Baler with an arrow made of Mistletoe, being the only plant to which Balder was vulnerable. Some versions of the story have mistletoe becoming a symbol of peace and friendship to compensate for its part in the murder.

Mistletoe continued to be associated with fertility and vitality through the Middle Ages, and by the 18th century it had also become incorporated into Christmas celebrations around the world. The custom of kissing under the mistletoe is referred to as popular among servants in late 18th century England: the serving class of Victorian England is credited with perpetuating the tradition. The tradition dictated that a man was allowed to kiss any woman standing underneath mistletoe, and that bad luck would befall any woman who refused the kiss. One variation on the tradition stated that with each kiss a berry was to be plucked from the mistletoe, and the kissing must stop after all the berries had been removed.
