Inn at the End of the Road by P. Buckley Moss
Content & Subject
Inn at the End of the Road by P. Buckley Moss is a signed and numbered limited edition lithograph that celebrates the warmth of hospitality, the romance of travel, and the enduring charm of America’s historic inns. Belonging to the Moss Fall Collection and the Historic Landmarks Collection, this artwork transports viewers back to a time when stagecoaches carried travelers along country roads and the local inn served as a welcoming haven.
The composition features a stately red-brick inn with white verandas, its architecture exuding both strength and grace. In the foreground, a vivid red stagecoach arrives, drawn by a spirited team of four horses. Luggage rests securely atop the coach, suggesting the anticipation of travelers about to enjoy the comforts of the inn after a long journey. The autumnal backdrop of trees enhances the scene with seasonal warmth, grounding the piece in tradition and nostalgia.
Style & Technique
Moss’s folk-inspired style is beautifully displayed in this lithograph. The crisp lines of the brick inn, the graceful curvature of the horses, and the soft natural hues of the background all work together to create a storybook-like quality. The red of the stagecoach provides a lively contrast against the earthy tones, immediately drawing the viewer’s attention to the bustle and energy of travel.
Lithography allows the fine architectural details of the inn to shine—its windows, chimneys, and porches are rendered with Moss’s characteristic clarity and charm. The balance between structure and movement captures both permanence (the inn as a landmark) and fleeting moments (the coach’s arrival).
Mood & Inspiration
The mood of Inn at the End of the Road is nostalgic and inviting. It captures a time when journeys were measured in days rather than hours, and where the arrival of a stagecoach meant stories shared by travelers, warm meals, and restful nights.
Moss often celebrates landmarks and traditions that connect people across time. Here, she offers a tribute to America’s early inns—symbols of hospitality, safety, and community. The artwork invites viewers to imagine the countless arrivals and departures, and the timeless role of inns as places of rest and renewal.

Collector’s Note
The Pennsylvania House is a historic inn and tavern in western Springfield, Ohio, United States. Built circa 1822, this three-story brick Federal structure lies along the original National Road and near the old road that connects Springfield with Dayton, Ohio. In the early years of the nineteenth century, the National and Dayton-Springfield Roads were major transportation arteries for those bound for the West and for Cincinnati respectively. Inns such as the Pennsylvania House were instrumental in facilitating travel for the many would-be settlers and merchants headed for the western frontier and for all sorts of travellers proceeding southwest.
