At the center of The Smile Machine, a young boy and girl ride a carousel horse together, their expressions filled with joy and wonder. The golden carousel horse, suspended by twisted poles, gently rises above a white picket fence in the foreground. The children’s traditional-style clothing—complete with bonnet and hat—subtly echoes historic Americana influences, connecting the playful moment to Moss’s signature reverence for heritage and tradition.

The softly swirling canopy overhead creates a dreamlike atmosphere, with muted purples, blues, and warm earth tones blending harmoniously. In the distance, faint silhouettes of historic buildings or landmarks appear beneath the pastel sky, grounding the whimsical carousel ride within a setting that reflects community and shared history.

The Smile Machine beautifully blends fantasy and nostalgia. The carousel—often found in town squares, fairs, or near historic landmarks—becomes a symbol of joy that transcends generations. Moss reminds us that while architecture and landmarks may stand still through time, laughter and childhood delight are the true engines that bring life to those spaces.

Through The Smile Machine, Moss celebrates both youth and heritage, portraying the simple pleasure of a ride that feels magical to children yet warmly familiar to adults who remember similar moments from their own past.

Style & Technique

Created as a limited edition lithograph in 2001, The Smile Machine reflects P. Buckley Moss’s mature artistic style. Her figures are gently elongated, their expressions subtle yet expressive. Fine linework defines the carousel horse’s contours, while soft shading creates depth without overwhelming the delicate composition.

The circular framing of The Smile Machine enhances its storybook quality. The rounded edges mimic the motion of the carousel itself—continuous, rhythmic, and comforting. Moss’s pastel palette adds warmth and serenity, balancing movement with tranquility.

The lithographic printing process preserves the intricate textures of the swirling canopy, the horse’s sculpted form, and the children’s detailed garments. As a numbered edition, this piece holds collectible appeal, especially within the P. Buckley Moss Historic Landmark Collection, where landmarks and community spaces are celebrated not just as structures, but as places filled with shared experiences.

Mood & Inspiration

The mood of The Smile Machine is joyful, nostalgic, and gently whimsical. It evokes the sound of carousel music drifting through the air, the soft creak of wooden poles, and the delight of children experiencing simple pleasures.

Moss has long been inspired by American traditions and the gathering places that shape communal life. In The Smile Machine, the carousel becomes a metaphor for happiness—an uncomplicated, mechanical wonder whose sole purpose is to create smiles. The title itself suggests that joy can be engineered through shared moments and cherished traditions.

This artwork resonates deeply with collectors who value themes of childhood innocence, Americana landmarks, and family connection. It serves as a reminder that while times change, the magic of laughter remains constant.
