Historical Significance
Stone piers like the one depicted in this artwork were commonly built in the 18th and 19th centuries as durable waterfront structures for docking boats, fishing, and community gathering. Constructed from locally sourced stone, these piers often became central landmarks in small towns, supporting trade, travel, and daily life. Over time, many evolved into scenic public spaces, preserving their historical role while serving as peaceful places for recreation and reflection.
Style & Technique
Rendered as a lithograph, Stone Pier showcases P. Buckley Moss’s signature folk-art style, with delicate linework, soft textures, and a muted, natural color palette.
The composition is gently detailed yet uncluttered, allowing the viewer’s eye to move peacefully across the scene. Moss’s use of soft greens and blues creates a soothing atmosphere, while her stylized figures maintain the timeless, nostalgic quality her work is known for.
