Description
Evening Patrol Etching by P. Buckley Moss
Content & Subject
Evening Patrol is a rare, limited edition etching by P. Buckley Moss, hand-signed and titled by the artist. As with all of Moss’s etchings, this edition is extremely limited—just 99 impressions worldwide—making it one of the rarest forms of her work.
The scene depicts two majestic geese standing alert in a snowy winter landscape. Their warm, coppery-orange bodies contrast beautifully against the soft whites, silvers, and cool blues of the snow-covered ground and distant trees. With their long necks stretched upward, they embody both grace and vigilance, perfectly fitting the title Evening Patrol.
This work appeals to collectors of the Geese Collection, Landscape Collection, and Etching Collection and carries Moss’s signature blend of serenity, symbolism, and nature-inspired beauty.
The Art of Etching: How Evening Patrol Was Made
Unlike lithographs or offset prints, etchings are created by hand through a traditional printmaking process, which makes each piece an original fine art print rather than a reproduction.
-
The Plate – Moss begins with a copper or zinc plate, coating it with a waxy ground resistant to acid.
-
The Drawing – She draws her design directly into the ground with an etching needle, exposing the metal beneath.
-
The Acid Bath – The plate is immersed in acid, which “bites” into the exposed lines, etching them into the metal.
-
Inking the Plate – Ink is applied over the plate, filling the etched lines. The surface is then carefully wiped so only the incised areas hold ink.
-
Printing – The plate is run through a press with dampened archival paper, transferring the inked image under tremendous pressure.
-
Hand Finishing – Each impression is pulled by hand, then signed and numbered by Moss, ensuring no two are exactly alike.
Because the plate wears down with each press run, editions are kept very small—just 99 for Moss etchings—making them some of her most collectible works.
Style & Mood
The print conveys quiet dignity and balance. The geese, standing in harmony with one another, symbolize watchfulness, loyalty, and seasonal migration. Moss’s muted winter background highlights the warm-toned feathers, creating a striking visual contrast. The delicate line-work of bare trees enhances the sense of stillness and evening calm.
