Description
“Blue Plate” by P. Buckley Moss stands as a captivating departure from the artist’s signature folk art style, offering viewers a rare glimpse into her expressive versatility. This limited-edition print showcases a bold, dynamic composition centered around a large, vibrant bouquet of flowers. The rich blues of the plate and vase contrast with the soft, earthy tones of the background and the muted hues of the figures, creating a harmonious balance of color that draws the eye to every intricate detail.
The figures surrounding the bouquet appear contemplative, their subdued expressions adding an air of mystery and introspection to the piece. Moss, known for her deep appreciation of community and connection, seems to convey a quiet narrative through this print. Perhaps she invites us to reflect on the stories and emotions shared in the presence of beauty—whether the bouquet symbolizes a celebration, a shared memory, or the fleeting nature of life itself.
In this work, Blue Plate feels less rooted in Moss’s typical rural simplicity and more steeped in raw emotion and symbolism. The bold colors and intricate details suggest a deeper layer of meaning, offering onlookers a chance to interpret its message in their own way. A rare and expressive masterpiece, “Blue Plate” is a testament to Moss’s artistic depth and a treasured find for any collector.

This is not a print that I would have been drawn to in my early years of collecting Moss works as it’s so unlike Pat Moss and her typical style. However, I have learned over the years that Pat had many visions of art locked away needing to find their way under her brush. The more I see her unusual, less typical work, I see in it so much feeling, thought and moments of real life. As I analyze Blue Pate, so many parts of this art piece is all about her typical style with the calligraphy type trees through the window to the portrait of a lovely cat so elegantly framed on the wall. Looking deeper, I see Pat’s geometric lines she often incorporates and the floral arrangement with her iconic design of large blooms with very defined edges. Loving the soft tones of color with a pop of vibrance that wakes your senses. Master of the watercolor brush…Pat Buckley Moss!
