Story Behind the Artwork
The title combines two ideas particularly well: “angelic,” describing the winged figure, and “rhapsody,” a musical term associated with an expressive composition of relatively free form.
Rather than surrounding the musician with a detailed setting, Moss isolates the figure against open white space. The angel appears absorbed in playing, head inclined toward the violin while the bow crosses the composition on a strong diagonal.

The violin is a Renaissance instrument with remarkably durable basic proportions. Instruments of the violin family appeared in essentially their modern form in northern Italy around the middle of the 16th century, particularly around Brescia and Cremona. Andrea Amati of Cremona was among the early makers credited with helping establish the familiar four-string violin and the classic sizes of the violin family. Although violin construction and playing technique continued to evolve, a musician today would still immediately recognize the fundamental instrument that emerged nearly five centuries ago. This history concerns the violin generally, not the particular instrument depicted in Angelic Rhapsody.
