Description
Star Barn Winter by P. Buckley Moss
Content & Subject
Star Barn Winter by P. Buckley Moss is a 2006 limited edition, numbered lithograph, beautifully represented within the Barn Collection, Moss Geese Collection, and Historic Landmark Collection. This serene winter scene features a stately white barn—resembling a quiet country church—nestled in a softly snow-covered landscape.
In the foreground, two graceful geese stand side by side, their presence adding life and gentle movement to the stillness of the scene. The barn, with its simple yet elegant architecture and subtle star detail, becomes a symbol of heritage, faith, and rural tradition. The snow blankets the land in calm silence, while the muted sky and soft tones evoke a peaceful winter day.
Style & Technique
In Star Barn Winter, Moss’s signature folk-art style is expressed through clean lines, softened forms, and a harmonious color palette. The lithograph process preserves the delicate transitions between whites, blues, and gentle grays, capturing the quiet beauty of winter light.
The composition is balanced and tranquil—the strong architectural presence of the barn contrasts with the organic shapes of the geese and rolling snowdrifts. Moss’s restrained use of color enhances the sense of calm and timelessness.
Mood & Inspiration
The mood of Star Barn Winter is peaceful, reflective, and quietly reverent. Moss draws inspiration from rural landscapes and historic structures, often blending themes of faith, simplicity, and nature.
The geese, standing together, symbolize companionship and loyalty, while the barn suggests stability and tradition. Together, these elements create a scene that feels both grounded and spiritually uplifting.

About the Stare Barn:
Star Barn Complex, also known as the John Motter Barn and Outbuildings and “Walnut Hill,” is a historic farm outbuilding complex located at Lower Swatara Township, Dauphi County, Pennsylvania. It includes a large barn, carriage house (c. 1872), coop (c. 1872), grain silo, and milk house. The main barn, known as the Star Barn, was built in 1872, and is a five bay, Gothic Revival style frame building. It features an immense cupola atop a cross-gable roof.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
Dismantling of the barn began in October 2015 in preparation for a move to a site in Lancaster County where it will be preserved.
