In Fourth of July at VMI, Moss presents the stately façade of the Virginia Military Institute, one of America’s oldest and most respected military colleges. The grand Gothic-inspired architecture stretches across the composition, symbolizing discipline, honor, leadership, and academic excellence. The impressive stone buildings stand proudly beneath a soft summer sky, their symmetry and historic beauty reflecting nearly two centuries of military tradition.
Adding excitement to the peaceful campus are several colorful hot air balloons drifting gracefully overhead, celebrating the Fourth of July festivities. Their vibrant colors contrast beautifully against the pale sky, introducing movement and a sense of joyful celebration. The balloons evoke feelings of freedom, adventure, and the optimism that accompanies America’s Independence Day.
Prominently displayed before the historic campus are the American flag and the Virginia state flag, both flying proudly in the summer breeze. Together they symbolize patriotism, service, and the enduring values upon which both the nation and the Institute were founded. The carefully manicured parade grounds in the foreground reinforce VMI’s long-standing traditions of military precision and excellence.
The title Fourth of July at VMI perfectly reflects the artwork’s celebration of two enduring American institutions—our nation’s independence and one of its premier military academies. Rather than portraying military activity alone, P. Buckley Moss captures a moment where education, history, patriotism, and community come together in peaceful harmony.
Throughout Fourth of July at VMI, Moss pays tribute to the cadets, faculty, alumni, and countless individuals who have shaped the legacy of the Virginia Military Institute. Her thoughtful composition honors both the architectural beauty of the campus and the ideals of service, leadership, and commitment that continue to define the institution.
Collectors are especially drawn to Fourth of July at VMI because it beautifully combines architectural history, patriotic symbolism, educational excellence, and celebratory Americana into one timeless composition.
Style & Technique
Fourth of July at VMI showcases P. Buckley Moss’s signature watercolor-inspired style through soft washes of warm creams, muted greens, delicate blues, and gentle earth tones. Fine linework highlights the architectural details of the historic campus while expressive brushstrokes create the peaceful sky and colorful hot air balloons.
As a Limited Edition, Numbered Giclée, Fourth of July at VMI faithfully preserves the subtle textures, rich colors, and painterly qualities of Moss’s original artwork. The panoramic composition beautifully emphasizes the grandeur of the campus while allowing each architectural detail to remain clear and balanced.
The restrained palette creates an elegant atmosphere while allowing the patriotic flags and colorful balloons to become striking focal points.
Mood & Inspiration
The mood of Fourth of July at VMI is proud, uplifting, and inspiring. Inspired by America’s Independence Day and the enduring traditions of the Virginia Military Institute, P. Buckley Moss celebrates leadership, education, service, and national pride.

About Virginia Military Institute
The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is a state-supported military college in Lexington, Virginia, the oldest such institution in the United States. Unlike any other Senior Military College in the United States, and in keeping with its founding principles, VMI enrolls cadets only and awards baccalaureate degrees exclusively. VMI offers cadets strict military discipline combined with a spartan, physically and academically demanding environment. The Institute grants degrees in 14 disciplines in engineering, the sciences, and the liberal arts.
While VMI has been called the West Point of the South, it differs from the federal service academies in several respects. For example, the living conditions at VMI are far more austere than at the service academies. Also, while all cadets must participate in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), they are afforded the flexibility of pursuing civilian endeavors or accepting a commission in any of the active or reserve components of any of the U.S. military branches upon graduation.
