Description
Blue Plate by P. Buckley Moss
Content & Subject
Blue Plate is a rare limited edition lithograph by American artist P. Buckley Moss, notable for being a striking departure from her signature folk art style. This rare and modern composition highlights Moss’s remarkable versatility as an artist and her ability to move beyond traditional themes while still capturing human connection and intimacy.
The artwork depicts a group of six individuals gathered around a table, their attention centered on a large floral arrangement of warm orange, yellow, and violet blossoms. The figures are rendered in elongated, fluid lines, each with distinct gestures and expressions, demonstrating Moss’s exploration of modernist form and rhythm. In the background, a cat portrait framed on the wall adds a playful yet refined touch, anchoring the scene with a subtle nod to domestic life.
Blue Plate is a fascinating example of Moss’s broader range—rare in subject, composition, and technique—making it highly sought after by serious collectors.
Style & Technique
Unlike Moss’s traditional folk figures in bonnets and rural settings, Blue Plate ventures into modernist expression, employing bold lines, abstracted forms, and a vibrant yet controlled color palette. The angularity of the table contrasts with the fluidity of the figures, creating a dynamic sense of movement around the floral centerpiece.
The floral arrangement dominates the composition, not only serving as a visual focal point but also symbolizing abundance, life, and shared experience. The muted golden and earth tones are punctuated by bursts of color, adding energy to the calm setting. Moss’s inclusion of the framed cat portrait reveals her attention to balance, humor, and the layered stories within domestic interiors.
As a signed and numbered lithograph, Blue Plate captures Moss’s mastery of different styles, making it both rare and historically significant in her body of work.
Mood & Inspiration
The mood of Blue Plate is contemplative, elegant, and intimate. It portrays a moment of gathering, reflection, and quiet companionship. While Moss often drew inspiration from rural traditions and simple joys, here she channels a more cosmopolitan sensibility, reflecting the universality of human connection around shared spaces and rituals.
The modern style suggests an exploration of diversity in expression, reminding collectors that Moss’s artistry cannot be confined to one genre alone. This work illustrates her adaptability and her lifelong commitment to pushing artistic boundaries.

Laura DeRamus –
This is not a print that I would have been drawn to in my early years of collecting Moss works as it’s so unlike Pat Moss and her typical style. However, I have learned over the years that Pat had many visions of art locked away needing to find their way under her brush. The more I see her unusual, less typical work, I see in it so much feeling, thought and moments of real life. As I analyze Blue Pate, so many parts of this art piece is all about her typical style with the calligraphy type trees through the window to the portrait of a lovely cat so elegantly framed on the wall. Looking deeper, I see Pat’s geometric lines she often incorporates and the floral arrangement with her iconic design of large blooms with very defined edges. Loving the soft tones of color with a pop of vibrance that wakes your senses. Master of the watercolor brush…Pat Buckley Moss!
